The Sky Is Blue in Boston, a solo exhibit by Emily Chiavelli, features analog photographs the artist shot in the year following her mother’s death in March 2023, primarily in California’s San Joaquin Valley. The black and white images are overlaid with medical notecards her sister used to study for the MCAT during that same year.
The intimate images of rural landscapes evoke melancholy, solitude, and mysticism with wide shots of expansive skies and closely cropped images of a resting hand or a head, deep in thought, captured from behind.
