SUMMARY:Canoe Camp (for Grownups!)
DESCRIPTION:Are you excited to get on the water this summer? \nCome to Canoe Camp for two weekends of on-water adventure\, skill-building\, and summer camp vibes! Gain skills for feeling more confident on the water! Get ready to volunteer\, lead trips\, and make your own events. Plus earn badges for new skills! We’ll learn practical skills for exploring our urban waterways: paddling\, radio communication\, knots & line work\, trip planning\, chart reading\, tides & currents\, weather\, water safety\, and event planning. \nThis four-session program runs over two weekend — May 30-31 and June 6-7 (Saturday & Sunday) — from 10am -2pm. Sessions will build on one another\, so participation in all sessions is expected.\n18+ only \nRegistration is a sliding scale fee: \n\nRegular: $200 — this is the full cost of the program for participants\nSupported: $100 — for those unable to pay the full cost\nPay-It-Forward: $300 — for those able to help support the program.\n\nSign up now! New members (at any level) who complete the full program are also eligible to receive a free\, one-season upgrade to Steward-level membership.  \nIf you’d like to attend and even the reduced cost is a hardship\, or if you’d like to sponsor an (adult) canoe camper\, email us.\n \nAbout the Instructor \nDanielle Butler is an avid water and summer camp enthusiast. She has sailed across the Atlantic\, run a creative residency on a historic tugboat in Alaska\, and spent over a decade creating on-water events and boating in New York Harbor. Danielle teaches design at Fordham University and creates elaborate experiences\, both celebratory and educational. \n  \nReviews from last year’s camp\n“Not to set expectations too high — but I can confidently say that Canoe Camp 2025 changed my life! Two weekends of skills education\, canal observation\, paddling\, laughing\, and so much nerding out on everything from barges to bacteria counts\, with some of the coolest\, smartest\, quirkiest\, most fun people you’ll have the pleasure to meet in this city. And then getting to hang out with them for the rest of the summer\, on sunrise\, sunset\, and full moon paddles\, helping New Yorkers get on the water for the first time\, and so much more. Having a home you can go to all summer on the water with great folks really improves life in this city\, even if it is part of a Superfund site. :)” \n\n“I loved the playful camp spirit along with all the amazing skill sharing and diving (not literally!) into the historical and present-day stories of the Gowanus Canal. Making drizzly morning observations of the canal (herons! fish! mussels! condoms!) and watching the tides (we are a coastal town!) made me feel connected in a way I never experienced before. Danielle built a lovely community and inspired us to keep canoeing all season long!”

SUMMARY:FREE Walk-Up Paddling - 2nd St.
DESCRIPTION:Hop into a Gowanus Dredgers canoe and paddle at your own pace inside the protected Gowanus Canal. Enjoy discovering the canal’s unique mix of wildlife and urban waterway infrastructure\, practice your paddling skills\, or take a guided audio tour and learn more about the history\, cleanup and revitalization of our favorite urban waterway. \nWe’ll outfit you with a life jacket (which must be worn at all times) and paddle\, offer some basic instruction on how to paddle and safety tips on how to use a canoe\, and help you set off on your own self-guided journey. Trips may be limited to 20 minutes if there’s a crowd — but usually we just expect you to return to the dock 15 min. prior to closing. \nWho can participate? Paddling is for everyone! Free walk-up canoeing is open to all ages. Groups\, families\, solo paddlers\, and intrepid first dates are all welcome! Minors require a guardian’s signature to participate\, and all participants must sign a waiver. \nWhat should I wear? Dress for the weather: wear sunscreen\, hats\, and bring a water bottle — and bring layers if there’s a breeze! Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. \nIs it really free?  Yes! But donations are encouraged to help us continue offering these and other programs. \nCan I volunteer? Yes! You can sign up to volunteer on our event registration page. Volunteer shifts run from 30-minutes before the start of the program through the first two hours\, or from the middle of the program to 30 minutes after the end of the scheduled time.

SUMMARY:Dreams of Water\, Bodies of Earth: Lenore Solmo and Chao Wang
DESCRIPTION:Dreams of Water\, Bodies of Earth is a dual exhibition that explores the intersection of natural and synthetic ecosystems through radiant aquatic installations and fantastical entomological paintings. \n\nBrooklyn-based artist Lenore Solmo reimagines single-use plastic bottles\, vintage jewelry parts\, and other found objects into luminous sea creatures\, oysters\, and seascapes. She transforms discarded items into a living record of human presence and plastic in the natural world\, documenting the ubiquity of the material and its environmental impact on our oceans.\n\nChao Wang‘s oil paintings focus on insects and terrestrial life\, observing delicate organisms that often exist unnoticed within our everyday environment. The Gowanus-based artist blurs the boundary between scientific observation and imagined ecology\, presenting insects as symbols of resilience\, transformation\, and interconnected intelligence.\n\nDreams of Water\, Bodies of Earth reflects on environmental fragility\, material transformation\, and the evolving relationship between living organisms and human-made worlds. Traversing between marine and terrestrial realms\, the exhibition explores how modern life shapes our views of nature.\n \nDreams of Water\, Bodies of Earth\nLenore Solmo and Chao Wang\nOn view Saturdays\, June 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\, 1pm–5pm\nOpening Reception: Saturday\, June 6\, 2pm–5pm\n \nWorkshop: Create Up-cycled Plastic Handbag Charms\nSaturday\, June 13\, 2pm–3:30pm\nSuited for ages 8 & up. Children must be accompanied by an adult.\n\nLenore Solmo – www.lenoresolmo.com @lenoresolmolifestyle \nChao Wang – chaowangart.com @chaowangart\n\nOur boathouse arts programing is possible thanks in part to the Brooklyn Arts Council Local Arts Support Grant
