SUMMARY:A Persistence of Cormorants Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. Event may move to inside the boathouse if it begins to rain or we want to escape the summer heat. If other activity is occurring on the street or esplanade\, event may move inside. \nParticipation is free but we encourage donations to sustain the efforts of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club\, an advocacy stewardship organization who has been representing neighborhood interests for over two decades. \nMay5th: Safia Jama\, Ruh Danon\, Elaine Sexton\, JoAnne McFarland 19th:  Willa Schneberg\, Kristine Esser Slentz\, Silvia Thomas\, John Leo \nJune2nd: Cheryl Fish\, Anton Anton Yakovlev\, Leah Umansky\, KC Trommer 9th: Sarah Arvio\, Dennis Nurkse\, Mervyn Taylor\, Estha Weiner23rd: JoAnna Solifren\, Sara Marron\, Arden Levin\, Jason Koo30th: Scott Hightower\, Sara Sarai\, Bruce Whitacre\, Dan Kaplan \nJuly14th: Broadstone Books: Myra Malkin\, Meredith Trede\, Stephanie Laterza\, Marcia LeBeau21st: Dan Nester\, Carley Moore\, David Francis\, Linda Russo28th: Gerry LaFamina\, Maddy Barnes\, Sara Wallace\, Sarah Gutowski \nAugust4th: John Deming\, Miranda Beeson\, Amy Holman\, Jason Schneiderman11th: Jordan Franklin Matthew Thornburn\, Alex Long\, David Geoff18th: Myra Shapiro\, Richard Levine\, Carl Rosenstock\, Barbara Elovic25th: Linda Lerner\, Linda Kleinbub\, Ron Kolm\, Bill Considine \nSeptember8th: Abigail Welhouse Jiwon Choi\, Austin Alexsis\, Karen Neuberg15th: Michael Broder\, Indran Amirthanayagam\, Erin Lynn\, Amy Lemmon22th: Tina Cane\, Zoe Ryder White\, Caitlin McDonnell\, Denver Butson\, Terence Degnan29th: Neil Shepard\, Hilary Sideris\, Kristina Anderson\, Anthony Cappo \nOctober6th: Lisa Andrews\, Lisa Badner\, Karen Heldebrand\, Grace G13th: Broadstone Books: Susana H Case\, Lynn Mcgee\, Amy Barone\, Margo Stever\, Mary Maloney

SUMMARY:The Fish Queen of the Gowanus Canal: An On-Water Musical
DESCRIPTION:The Fish Queen of the Gowanus Canal\nby Wes Braver\, additional book by Rebecca Slaman\nProduced by Wes Braver\, Joseph Alexiou & Brad Vogel in partnership with the Gowanus Dredgers \nJoin the Gowanus Dredgers for this one-of-a-kind theater experience! We have two tiers of tickets\, from the shore or via canoe\, where you’ll get to paddle around our performers on floating stages. This is a show not to be missed.\n🎟️ GET YOUR TICKETS NOW 🎟️ \nImage by Melissa Tomczak \nIn nature\, ecologists can assess the health of an ecosystem by studying its waterways. This show explores the toxic culture of America by focusing on one of its most toxic waterways: the Gowanus Canal. \nRumors have been spreading of a superorganism lurking beneath the murky water…a monster made out of toxic industrial runoff and human sewage\, that holds all the memories of everyone whose waste has ever gone into the water… \nThe Fish Queen tells the story of a place polluted by violence\, from the first Dutch settlers who displaced the native Lenape tribes who fished in the Gowanus creek\, to the Battle of Brooklyn fought on its shores\, to the police who cleared out poor Irish tenements\, to the mafia bosses who used the canal as a body-dumping ground. The Fish Queen\, like the canal she lives in\, is full of contradictions: the multi-headed being\, played by eight actors\, will sing funny songs\, sad songs\, angry songs\, weighty songs and petty songs. \nAs many of us who live\, work\, and maybe even paddle on the Gowanus know\, beauty still can thrive here between the cracks. This show celebrates that while wrestling with questions of how to love and gather ourselves against the forces that keep the toxic cycles going. \nCome see this once in a lifetime world premiere production in the most fitting place imaginable: In the f*cking Gowanus Canal. (This is a PG-13 show for dirty language\, which only feels appropriate for the subject matter) \nIf raining or threatening weather (high winds\, lightning) by 5:30pm we may cancel. Attendees will be notified via the email used to purchase tickets. No Refunds\, see FAQ on the ticket page for more info. \n
