SUMMARY:Brooklyn Tides: Excerpts from New York Waterfront Diary
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn Tides: Excerpts from New York Waterfront Diary is a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based photographer Sophie Fenwick. The exhibit showcases photographs of various Brooklyn waterfront neighborhoods culled from the artist’s book New York Waterfront Diary\, published by 5 Continents Editions in 2023. \nThe 19 photographs on view feature the northwestern Brooklyn neighborhoods of Gowanus\, Sunset Park\, Red Hook\, DUMBO\, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard — where views of waterways conjure memories and inspire dreams. Some photos feature derelict buildings found in these waterfront locales\, highlighting the beauty and mystery in decay. In haunting black-and-white and vivid color\, the images serve as an unofficial timeline\, showing these neighborhoods over the years\, from the 1990s to just before the pandemic. \nFenwick’s evocative portraits demonstrate how these areas of Brooklyn have transformed over three decades. The images of Gowanus are especially timely as the neighborhood undergoes unprecedented change — with longtime locals no longer recognizing the surrounding streets\, and new residents moving into rapidly rising luxury buildings. The Super 8 footage\, shot by Fenwick and edited with Maya Han\, is an extension of the artist’s book and exhibition\, highlighting many of the sites seen in both. The film features excerpts of footage Fenwick shot along New York City waterfront neighborhoods in the early 1990s. SUMMARY:A Persistence of Cormorants Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting + Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 for some chatting and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

DESCRIPTION:City Fragments\, a dual exhibition featuring Carol Dronsfield and Leigh Klonsky\, encourages viewers to look at their urban surroundings in a different light. The Brooklyn-based artists explore and dissect familiar NYC scenes that many of us often overlook. Dronsfield zeros in on wild postings – multi-layered wheat paste advertisements\, and Klonsky focuses on street trees. They photograph these everyday sights and reinterpret them using collage and mixed media\, creating extraordinary\, fragmented views of our city. \nCarol Dronsfield started The Wild Postings Project in 2012\, focusing her lens on construction site walls plastered with multiple layers of advertisements\, posters\, and graffiti — the more layered\, weathered\, and battered the walls\, the better. She photographs the multi-layered remnants of the postings and adds painting\, drawing\, and vintage ephemera to the prints\, highlighting the beauty in urban decadence. \nOriginally from Hartford\, Connecticut\, Dronsfield began her career as an art director in New York City before becoming a commercial photographer. Her current work focuses on street photography\, capturing the city’s landscape and its diverse array of characters. She co-founded Exposure\, The Salon for Women Photographers\, in 2024. Composed with more than 500 photographs of tree beds\, bird’s nests\, plastic bags\, indoor plants\, and images of humans intersecting with nature\, the works reveal the love\, neglect\, and abuse directed toward these urban oases. Using glue\, paint\, and nails\, Klonsky transforms her photos of the trees into mighty patchworked beings. \nA native of Chicago\, Klonsky received her BFA from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and her Masters of Art in Education from Brooklyn College. She has been an NYC public school art teacher for nearly 20 years. DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. DESCRIPTION:Gather materials for cyanotype printmaking on a short canoe paddle in Gowanus Bay! \n🎟️ RSVP REQUIRED tickets available starting August 17🎟️ RSVP here \nJoin Brian Ellis and the Gowanus Dredgers for a mid-day cyanotype printmaking workshop! After a short discussion of the printmaking process\, we will paddle to a nearby location to gather materials for our prints. Upon returning to the Bunker \, we will set up and harvest the power of the sun to create some wonderful prints that participants will be able to take home the same day. Beyond the standard cyanotype process\, we will also cover wet cyanotype\, image transfer\, and coffee-based bleaching and toning as time allows. \nCost: Suggested donation of $5-10\, however no one turned away for lack of funds. We want this to be accessible to everyone\, please contact us if you have a financial hardship. \nRSVP Required as seats are limited. \nAbout the Artist: Brian Ellis is a process-based cyanotype artist who uses the medium to explore human physicality and detritus. Her current work focuses on street photography\, capturing the city’s landscape and its diverse array of characters. She co-founded Exposure\, The Salon for Women Photographers\, in 2024. Composed with more than 500 photographs of tree beds\, bird’s nests\, plastic bags\, indoor plants\, and images of humans intersecting with nature\, the works reveal the love\, neglect\, and abuse directed toward these urban oases. Using glue\, paint\, and nails\, Klonsky transforms her photos of the trees into mighty patchworked beings. \nA native of Chicago\, Klonsky received her BFA from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and her Masters of Art in Education from Brooklyn College. SUMMARY:On Location with Artichoke Dance | Robin Michals
DESCRIPTION:On Location with Artichoke Dance is a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based photographer Robin Michals. Curated by Pam Wong\, the exhibit showcases photographs of Artichoke Dance Company performing the Immersive Performance Tours of Gowanus conceived by Lynn Neuman in 2021\, and co-hosted annually with various environmental and social justice organizations. \n\nThe photographs on view feature Artichoke dancers moving through Gowanus in space and time and include images at the defunct Salt Lot in 2021 and the new 420 Carroll Street development in 2026. Michals merges the genres of dance photography and urban landscape photography in vibrant shots that capture the performances as well as the evolution of the neighborhood. The photos juxtapose the dancers as they work together to create patterns and shapes against a backdrop of the transforming waterfront. The photos offer an interpretation of the performances as a positive vision of urban life that values art\, collaboration\, and environmental awareness.\n\nIn addition\, there is a portrait of Neuman\, in costume\, on the tipping floor at SIMS Municipal Recycling\, taken for Michals and Neuman’s collaborative project Waste Side Story. Michals and Neuman met in 2018 through a residency offered by Works on Water and Underwater New York on Governors Island. Michals\, who had been working on environmental issues for 15 years\, was struck by Lynn’s upcycling of plastic bags into costumes\, and the pair began to work together to make images of a dancer wearing the costumes at locations that reflect the lifecycle of plastics from production to various end points including landfills and oceans. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting + Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 for some chatting and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

SUMMARY:On Location with Artichoke Dance | Robin Michals
DESCRIPTION:On Location with Artichoke Dance is a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based photographer Robin Michals. Curated by Pam Wong\, the exhibit showcases photographs of Artichoke Dance Company performing the Immersive Performance Tours of Gowanus conceived by Lynn Neuman in 2021\, and co-hosted annually with various environmental and social justice organizations. \n\nThe photographs on view feature Artichoke dancers moving through Gowanus in space and time and include images at the defunct Salt Lot in 2021 and the new 420 Carroll Street development in 2026. Michals merges the genres of dance photography and urban landscape photography in vibrant shots that capture the performances as well as the evolution of the neighborhood. The photos juxtapose the dancers as they work together to create patterns and shapes against a backdrop of the transforming waterfront. The photos offer an interpretation of the performances as a positive vision of urban life that values art\, collaboration\, and environmental awareness.\n\nIn addition\, there is a portrait of Neuman\, in costume\, on the tipping floor at SIMS Municipal Recycling\, taken for Michals and Neuman’s collaborative project Waste Side Story. Michals and Neuman met in 2018 through a residency offered by Works on Water and Underwater New York on Governors Island. Michals\, who had been working on environmental issues for 15 years\, was struck by Lynn’s upcycling of plastic bags into costumes\, and the pair began to work together to make images of a dancer wearing the costumes at locations that reflect the lifecycle of plastics from production to various end points including landfills and oceans. She was raised in Manhattan and moved to Brooklyn in the last century. Robin has taught photography at City Tech\, CUNY\, where her students are from all over the world\, for 23 years. DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting + Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 for some chatting and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

SUMMARY:Brooklyn Folk Festival: Banjo Toss Competition
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, as part of the Brooklyn Folk Festival \, contestants gather on the banks of the fetid Gowanus Canal to see who can throw a banjo the farthest in the – BANJO TOSS: BANJO THROWING COMPETITION! The special “throwing banjo”\, attached to a rope is tossed into the canal\, a federally designate Super Fund site. The marked rope pays out\, showing how far the banjo has been tossed. It is then hauled back in for the next throw. \nThe Brooklyn Folk Festival is presented each year by the Jalopy Theatre & School of Music\, a grassroots Red Hook\, Brooklyn community space that is a music venue\, music school\, and record label.  We are excited to support the Banjo Toss event activity so please stop by and join the fun! \nWe are told the best preparation for this competition is to attend a show at the Brooklyn Folk Festival so purchase tickets now before they are sold out.  While bearded men and women are growing in popularity as more people live\, work and play in our Gowanus neighborhood\, we are assured by the organizers that beards are optional. Our amazing collection of competitors reinforces the Dredgers theme of inclusion so stop by to cheer our competitors or compete in the toss as well!
