SUMMARY:A Persistence of Cormorants Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. Event may move to inside the boathouse if it begins to rain or we want to escape the summer heat. If other activity is occurring on the street or esplanade\, event may move inside. \nParticipation is free but we encourage donations to sustain the efforts of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club\, an advocacy stewardship organization who has been representing neighborhood interests for over two decades. \nMay4th: Gregory Crosby\, Brad Vogel\, Melinda Wilson\, Anthony Cappo18th: Scott Hightower\, Abigail Wellhouse\, Kristina Andersson\, Estha Weiner 25th: Michael Broder\, James Diaz\, Kristine Esser Stenz\, Sarah Sari \nJune1st: Susan Cohen\, Sarah Wallace\, Jiwon Choi\, Caroline Hagood 8th: Jo Solfren\, Amy Lemmon\, Sam Cha\, TBA22nd: Bruce E. Don’t miss your chance to create—and win—a piece of Gowanus art history! \nPAST PRESENTS the FUTURE\nReception: July 12 6-9pm\nArtists at the Gallery Saturdays in July (19\, 26\, Aug 2) 1-5PM or by appointment\nCurated by Pam Wong\n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nJoann began her artistic career in 1986\, when she would create wearable art from beads and found objects. As time went on she ventured into working with metals and would specialize in sculptural wire work jewelry and unique home decor art pieces.\nShe creates what she feels and has many mediums in which she works. She is currently creating works that use her photographs combined within her paintings. The combination of an abstract painting and a familiar place in a photo come together to create a semi abstract landscape.\nDriven by the desire to document the ever-changing environment around her\, Joann has naturally began cataloguing as much of the changes as she could. Through her lens\, she is saying these places\, people or times won’t be forgotten. While bearing witness to and capturing the transformations of entire neighborhoods and the complexities of the landscape she is also finding the source of her next mixed media painting. Her belief is that photographs serve as a living journal and that change is the one constant in life. \nThe street art of AURAxDR is the work of an established artist and musician that needed an anonymous space to share his deeper reflections of life and emotion on. The works evoke a mood or a meditative state.

SUMMARY:Release
DESCRIPTION:Come witness and participate in Release\, a temporary installation and informal movement session developed as part of a two-part workshop held at Coney Island Creek and Gowanus. Join us at the Dredgers Boat House to witness and explore: what gets collected and recorded when we connect to a place and the living things that occupy the place? What gets activated when these recordings are shared in a different space and time? How to move and make movements from these activations? \nPresented by Nora Almeida and iki nakagawa

SUMMARY:Rhythm & Flow: David Barthold and Josh Lambert
DESCRIPTION:Rhythm & Flow brings together the vibrant\, material-driven practices of David Barthold and Josh Lambert in a dynamic dialogue of structure\, motion\, and pattern. Both artists explore rhythm—Barthold through the exuberant visual culture of urban life and Lambert through the intuitive sequencing of abstract form. \nBarthold’s sculptures draw from the theatrical and the everyday\, transforming metal\, sign paint\, and salvaged materials into playful yet poignant assemblages. His works evoke the ornate façades of Brooklyn brownstones\, the whimsy of roadside Americana\, and the pulse of the city itself. They are vibrant totems of visual noise and human ambition\, rooted in place and memory. \nIn contrast\, Lambert’s wall-based constructions focus on rhythm as a process of iteration and variation. Through carefully layered wood panels and pigment\, he creates tactile compositions that operate like visual scores—each panel a beat\, each work a shifting cadence. Together\, Barthold and Lambert offer a meditation on flow: of cities\, time\, and form\, where structure meets improvisation and repetition gives rise to invention. \nRHYTHM & FLOW\nSaturdays in June (14th\, 21st\, 28th) 1-5PM or by appointment\nReception: June 7 (6-9pm)\nCurated by Pam Wong

SUMMARY:Street / Art Gowanus walking tour: Women's March Theme
DESCRIPTION:Rich Garr leads this comfortable open-air exploration through the Gowanus waterfront. He is a longtime area collage artist focusing on public art and community. These walks respond to both current events and history\, and a central component of his interdisciplinary collage art practice. These monthly public walking tours focus on art in and about the streets\, with histories layered into the experience. They’re carefully planned\, but unscripted and collaborative. Always fresh. Check @GothamSideWalks on Instagram for monthly themes- now announced in advance. Feel free to propose themes there\, too! \nTickets for these monthly Brooklyn walks often sell out. So try early. They cannot be purchased after 8am on the morning of the walk. \nGuild\, Captain Eyeliner\, RaeBK\, Billy Barnacles and other street art is often featured. So are historical landmarks (you all know about the Battle of Brooklyn\, right?)\, architectural gems\, hidden art spaces\, art by anonymous “green guerillas\,” and renowned graffiti writers. While old pollution lingers\, so do new issues surrounding gentrification and re-zoning. The area is changing rapidly\, and this tour offers real-time information & insight. Walks pass historic businesses\, hip new bars & cafes\, and quirky art & recreational spaces (i.e. shuffleboard\, climbing and ax throwing)… with plenty to taste and see before or after. Walks have been attended by a mix of tourists and locals alike for over a decade!

Check address location to find where the tour starts (route always changes!). \nTickets often sell out\, and cannot be purchased after 8am on the morning of the walk… so try early!

SUMMARY:Jos Prol: ARRIVALS
DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Dredgers are proud to present “ARRIVALS” by Joshua Prol. \nJos Prol was born in the Garden State\, fifteen miles west of the Hudson River. \nSince early childhood he explored pockets of nature nestled in urban sprawl and paddled on waterways of the New York Metropolitan area like the Passaic\, Raritan and Bronx Rivers. This fascination continued when he moved to New York in 2009 and ultimately led him to the home he found as a member of the Gowanus Dredgers. \nInterests in mathematics\, artistic expression and construction led him through an education in architecture and a career in structural engineering. Technical experience with the built environment\, deep interest in the rhythms of nature and unique location in a place where all meet in a dramatic way has inspired his new work. \nHe explores the relationship of things comprehensively ordered by human hand with bodies guided by forces beyond human control. He looks for patterns of order that may exist in fields that initially present themselves as chaos. He wonders whether a human individual has more similarities with a piece of driftwood that floats into the Gowanus Canal than we might think. \nJos Prol: ARRIVALS \nReception: November 9 (5-8pm)\nOpen 1-5 PM Saturdays in November [9\, 16\, 23\, 30] or by appointment
