DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 for some chatting and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. Unheard-of opens the show with new premieres written for them by Annika Socolofsky and Discocactus’s own keyboardist Ben Wallace. Unheard-of also performs new video game music arrangements from Ben and Unheard-of’s violinist Matheus Souza. Discocactus closes out the night performing some of their hits joined by members of Unheard-of! \nDiscocactus Bio: \nDiscoCactus is a collective of composers\, performers\, and arrangers. They play video game music. Sort of. They use video game soundtracks as a jumping off point for a party\, a nonstop display of kinetic musicianship that blends contemporary art music with dozens of pop styles\, steeped in the language of the Internet. \nEstablished in 2014\, the band’s core is made of six game audio professionals that serve as the primary arrangers and performing mainstays. But\, like a frightened cat\, Discocactus can grow up to four times its normal size when threatened (or for big projects). \nEach of DiscoCactus’s members is a world-class performer in their own right. Their members have studied at some of the world’s top conservatories\, written music for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales\, toured the world with Video Games Live\, and more. You’ve heard some of them in games like Celeste\, Destiny 2\, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI\, and Final Fantasy XV. You’ve heard SEVERAL of them in Anew: The Distant Light and Mortal Kombat 11. \nWhen it’s time to play as DiscoCactus\, these six performers form like Voltron\, bringing all of their experience and power down on one glorious purpose: To make you shake your ass. Some of us have debuted operas. Some of us study Brazilian pop. Some of us improvise. All of us combine our unique perspectives to make a show that transcends genre and transforms the music we play in fresh\, exciting ways. You don’t have to know a thing about video game music to enjoy DiscoCactus. You don’t even have to know a thing about music! You just need to strap in for a rollicking\, avant-garde nerd carnival. \n—— \nThis performance takes place on the Gowanus Canal\, from the 19th St. Bunker location. The audience can immerse themselves in the experience on the Gowanus\, enjoying the program from on land or on water. Limited boat access and on-water support are provided by The Gowanus Dredgers. She transforms discarded items into a living record of human presence and plastic in the natural world\, documenting the ubiquity of the material and its environmental impact on our oceans.\n\nChao Wang‘s oil paintings focus on insects and terrestrial life\, observing delicate organisms that often exist unnoticed within our everyday environment. DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. DESCRIPTION:Gather materials for cyanotype printmaking on a short canoe paddle in Gowanus Bay! \n🎟️ RSVP REQUIRED🎟️ RSVP here \nJoin Brian Ellis and the Gowanus Dredgers for a mid-day cyanotype printmaking workshop! After a short discussion of the printmaking process\, we will paddle to a nearby location to gather materials for our prints. Upon returning to the Bunker \, we will set up and harvest the power of the sun to create some wonderful prints that participants will be able to take home the same day. Beyond the standard cyanotype process\, we will also cover wet cyanotype\, image transfer\, and coffee-based bleaching and toning as time allows. \nCost: Suggested donation of $5-10\, however no one turned away for lack of funds. We want this to be accessible to everyone\, please contact us if you have a financial hardship. \nRSVP Required as seats are limited. \nAbout the Artist: Brian Ellis is a process-based cyanotype artist who uses the medium to explore human physicality and detritus. DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. The exhibit showcases photographs of various Brooklyn waterfront neighborhoods culled from the artist’s book New York Waterfront Diary\, published by 5 Continents Editions in 2023. \nThe 19 photographs on view feature the northwestern Brooklyn neighborhoods of Gowanus\, Sunset Park\, Red Hook\, DUMBO\, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard — where views of waterways conjure memories and inspire dreams. Some photos feature derelict buildings found in these waterfront locales\, highlighting the beauty and mystery in decay. In haunting black-and-white and vivid color\, the images serve as an unofficial timeline\, showing these neighborhoods over the years\, from the 1990s to just before the pandemic. \nFenwick’s evocative portraits demonstrate how these areas of Brooklyn have transformed over three decades. The images of Gowanus are especially timely as the neighborhood undergoes unprecedented change — with longtime locals no longer recognizing the surrounding streets\, and new residents moving into rapidly rising luxury buildings. DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 for some chatting and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn Tides: Excerpts from New York Waterfront Diary is a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based photographer Sophie Fenwick. The exhibit showcases photographs of various Brooklyn waterfront neighborhoods culled from the artist’s book New York Waterfront Diary\, published by 5 Continents Editions in 2023. \nThe 19 photographs on view feature the northwestern Brooklyn neighborhoods of Gowanus\, Sunset Park\, Red Hook\, DUMBO\, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard — where views of waterways conjure memories and inspire dreams. Some photos feature derelict buildings found in these waterfront locales\, highlighting the beauty and mystery in decay. In haunting black-and-white and vivid color\, the images serve as an unofficial timeline\, showing these neighborhoods over the years\, from the 1990s to just before the pandemic. \nFenwick’s evocative portraits demonstrate how these areas of Brooklyn have transformed over three decades. The images of Gowanus are especially timely as the neighborhood undergoes unprecedented change — with longtime locals no longer recognizing the surrounding streets\, and new residents moving into rapidly rising luxury buildings. SUMMARY:City Fragments | Carol Dronsfield & Leigh Klonsky
DESCRIPTION:City Fragments\, a dual exhibition featuring Carol Dronsfield and Leigh Klonsky\, encourages viewers to look at their urban surroundings in a different light. The Brooklyn-based artists explore and dissect familiar NYC scenes that many of us often overlook. Dronsfield zeros in on wild postings – multi-layered wheat paste advertisements\, and Klonsky focuses on street trees. They photograph these everyday sights and reinterpret them using collage and mixed media\, creating extraordinary\, fragmented views of our city. \nCarol Dronsfield started The Wild Postings Project in 2012\, focusing her lens on construction site walls plastered with multiple layers of advertisements\, posters\, and graffiti — the more layered\, weathered\, and battered the walls\, the better. She photographs the multi-layered remnants of the postings and adds painting\, drawing\, and vintage ephemera to the prints\, highlighting the beauty in urban decadence. \nOriginally from Hartford\, Connecticut\, Dronsfield began her career as an art director in New York City before becoming a commercial photographer. Her current work focuses on street photography\, capturing the city’s landscape and its diverse array of characters. She co-founded Exposure\, The Salon for Women Photographers\, in 2024. Composed with more than 500 photographs of tree beds\, bird’s nests\, plastic bags\, indoor plants\, and images of humans intersecting with nature\, the works reveal the love\, neglect\, and abuse directed toward these urban oases. Using glue\, paint\, and nails\, Klonsky transforms her photos of the trees into mighty patchworked beings. \nA native of Chicago\, Klonsky received her BFA from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and her Masters of Art in Education from Brooklyn College. She has been an NYC public school art teacher for nearly 20 years. DESCRIPTION:City Fragments\, a dual exhibition featuring Carol Dronsfield and Leigh Klonsky\, encourages viewers to look at their urban surroundings in a different light. The Brooklyn-based artists explore and dissect familiar NYC scenes that many of us often overlook. Dronsfield zeros in on wild postings – multi-layered wheat paste advertisements\, and Klonsky focuses on street trees. They photograph these everyday sights and reinterpret them using collage and mixed media\, creating extraordinary\, fragmented views of our city. \nCarol Dronsfield started The Wild Postings Project in 2012\, focusing her lens on construction site walls plastered with multiple layers of advertisements\, posters\, and graffiti — the more layered\, weathered\, and battered the walls\, the better. She photographs the multi-layered remnants of the postings and adds painting\, drawing\, and vintage ephemera to the prints\, highlighting the beauty in urban decadence. \nOriginally from Hartford\, Connecticut\, Dronsfield began her career as an art director in New York City before becoming a commercial photographer. Her current work focuses on street photography\, capturing the city’s landscape and its diverse array of characters. She co-founded Exposure\, The Salon for Women Photographers\, in 2024. Composed with more than 500 photographs of tree beds\, bird’s nests\, plastic bags\, indoor plants\, and images of humans intersecting with nature\, the works reveal the love\, neglect\, and abuse directed toward these urban oases. Using glue\, paint\, and nails\, Klonsky transforms her photos of the trees into mighty patchworked beings. \nA native of Chicago\, Klonsky received her BFA from the University of Wisconsin in Madison and her Masters of Art in Education from Brooklyn College. She has been an NYC public school art teacher for nearly 20 years. SUMMARY:A Persistence of Cormorants Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting + Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 for some chatting and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice.
