SUMMARY:A Persistence of Cormorants Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. Event may move to inside the boathouse if it begins to rain or we want to escape the summer heat. If other activity is occurring on the street or esplanade\, event may move inside. \nParticipation is free but we encourage donations to sustain the efforts of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club\, an advocacy stewardship organization who has been representing neighborhood interests for over two decades. \nMay4th: Gregory Crosby\, Brad Vogel\, Melinda Wilson\, Anthony Cappo18th: Scott Hightower\, Abigail Wellhouse\, Kristina Andersson\, Estha Weiner 25th: Michael Broder\, James Diaz\, Kristine Esser Stenz\, Sarah Sari \nJune1st: Susan Cohen\, Sarah Wallace\, Jiwon Choi\, Caroline Hagood 8th: Jo Solfren\, Amy Lemmon\, Sam Cha\, TBA22nd: Bruce E. SUMMARY:Paddle-In Movies : Creature Feature Weekend!
DESCRIPTION:Join The Gowanus Dredgers for a weekend of Creature Feature paddle-in movies! We’re screening our seasonal favorite\, Creature from the Black Lagoon\, as well as a new-to-us film\, The Beast from 20\,000 Fathoms. Tickets will be available starting 10/10\, register for each screening separately. \nOctober 24th: Our annual screening of Creature From the Black Lagoon\nOctober 25th: The Beast from 20\,000 Fathoms \nBook your ticket via eventbrite. Register for a free ticket to view from the shore or book a seat in a canoe to paddle from our 19th St. dock to our screening location. Canoes depart promptly at 6:00pm so don’t be late. Costumes encouraged! \nIf you’re joining us on shore\, we encourage you to bring a lawn chair or a blanket for seating. We’ll message everyone who has RSVP‘ed with the screening location a few days before the event. \n  \n\n\n\nOctober 24th: Creature from the Black Lagoon \nNear the Arctic Circle researchers detonate a nuclear device and unwittingly thaw a prehistoric beast frozen for millions of years. The monster leaves a path of destruction across eastern North America as it heads straight for New York City. When heavy artillery proves ineffective against the towering creature\, scientist Tom Nesbitt (Paul Christian) concocts a radioactive formula to neutralize the beast — and ace shot Cpl. Stone (Lee Van Cleef) will deliver it by grenade. \nRelease date: June 13\, 1953\nRunning time: 1h 20m \n  \n\nOctober 25th: The Beast from 20\,000 Fathoms \nRemnants of a mysterious animal have come to light in a remote jungle\, and a group of scientists intends to determine if the find is an anomaly or evidence of an undiscovered beast. To accomplish their goal\, the scientists (Antonio Moreno\, Richard Carlson\, Richard Denning\, Whit Bissell) must brave the most perilous pieces of land South America has to offer. But the terrain is nothing compared to the danger posed by an otherworldly being that endangers their work and their lives. \nRelease date: February 12\, 1954\nRunning time: 1h 19m

SUMMARY:UPDATE: Spooky Shenanigans on the Gowanus Canal - Halloween Parade
DESCRIPTION:Shenanigans will be on-shore tonight as a result of yesterday’s storm. \nHello Intrepid Gowanus Paddler\, \nWe have a different kind of “Boo!” for this Halloween afternoon. Unfortunately\, yesterday’s massive rainstorm — and the subsequent discharge of sewage into the Canal — and today’s extreme wind conditions mean that we are offically deciding that today’s conditions are TOO SCARY to host on-water shenanigans tonight. \nThe good news is: The Ukulele Cabaret and Gowanus Dredgers music community friends will still be hosting a fantastic show at the Boathouse at 7pm. \nWe’d also still love to see you in your Gowanusy costume for some shore-side fun. We’ll set up some DIY photo booth fun and games for those who want to come by anytime after 5pm. Help decorate the boathouse\, hang out with friends\, and crack open a seltzer or a beer to close out the week and the 2025 paddling season. \nLast note: Tomorrow\, we’ll be rolling up our sleeves all day at the Bunker for a season send off and work day. Join us to help with season-end chores\, some fun painting projects\, beginner-friendly dock maintenance\, and maybe a sunset fire pit after the work is done. We’re scheduled to be out there between 10am and 4pm.
