SUMMARY:Brooklyn Folk Festival: Banjo Toss Competition
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, as part of the Brooklyn Folk Festival \, contestants gather on the banks of the fetid Gowanus Canal to see who can throw a banjo the farthest in the – BANJO TOSS: BANJO THROWING COMPETITION! The special “throwing banjo”\, attached to a rope is tossed into the canal\, a federally designate Super Fund site. The marked rope pays out\, showing how far the banjo has been tossed. It is then hauled back in for the next throw. \nThe Brooklyn Folk Festival is presented each year by the Jalopy Theatre & School of Music\, a grassroots Red Hook\, Brooklyn community space that is a music venue\, music school\, and record label.  We are excited to support the Banjo Toss event activity so please stop by and join the fun! \nWe are told the best preparation for this competition is to attend a show at the Brooklyn Folk Festival so purchase tickets now before they are sold out.  While bearded men and women are growing in popularity as more people live\, work and play in our Gowanus neighborhood\, we are assured by the organizers that beards are optional. Our amazing collection of competitors reinforces the Dredgers theme of inclusion so stop by to cheer our competitors or compete in the toss as well!

SUMMARY:Argentinian Folk EP Listening party with LULITA
DESCRIPTION:LULITA is singer and artistic director born and raised in Brooklyn\, NYC. She pulls from her Argentine and Israeli roots to inspire her music and art\, always finding ways to fuse her cultures and unexpected sounds together. After graduating LaGuardia High School as a vocal major\, she pursued and obtained a degree in International Affairs and Global History from Lafayette College. After a year and a half of working closely with politicians and lawyers as a community organizer of housing rights in South Williamsburg\, deliberating whether to follow her passion of public law or music\, she ultimately decided to make the move to Buenos Aires\, Argentina. In Argentina\, she studied tango and folklore\, constantly finding underground traditional Argentine music collectives and improvising at last minute live jam sessions throughout the city. After a year and a half abroad\, she completed recording an entire Argentine folklore EP and artistically directed and produced a live show in one of Buenos Aire’s most famous underground tango halls\, La Catedral. She has now returned to Brooklyn to release and debut her first ever EP and attempt to introduce today’s NYC to the beauty and melancholy sounds of Argentine folclore. \nJoin LULITA for a listening party for her upcoming Argentinian Folk EP. Light snacks and drinks will be served\, and the EP listening will be followed by a short live performance.

SUMMARY:MUCKING THINGS UP: Noah Chesnin & Tanasia Swift
DESCRIPTION:MUCKING THINGS UP: Noah Chesnin & Tanasia Swift\n\nan intertidal talk with the Gowanus Dredgers \n\n \n\nJanuary 27\, 2025\n7 pm\nGowanus Dredgers Boathouse\n165 2nd Street\, Brooklyn\nFree\n  \n\nJoin the Gowanus Dredgers for the first talk in our new Mucking Things Up series launching this year! We’re hosting a series of informal talks focused more on storytelling than slideshows. Come learn about our harbor habitat.\n\n\nWe’ll be hearing from the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Noah Chesnin about the little-known Hudson Canyon\, a giant underwater landform out in the ocean in the coastal shelf off New York. There’s a movement afoot to designate it a national marine sanctuary\, and we’ll learn why it’s so special – from the marine species (including some Gowanus creatures) that need it for habitat to the chemosynthetic undersea vents awaiting further exploration in the Canyon. Learn about an upcoming series of dives into the Canyon coming up this summer. \n\n\nOur second speaker is someone who’s known around New York Harbor for her work with the Billion Oyster Project\, Tanasia Swift. A diver who knows a thing or two about many unusual nooks and crannies around the estuary\, Tanasia will let us know more about the organisms and ecosystems that we might not notice in our day-to-day interactions with the waters we encounter. \n\nSupport from Citizens Committee for New York City.

SUMMARY:Meeting: Help Grow Public Boating in Sunset Park!
DESCRIPTION:The NYC Water Trail Association and the Gowanus Dredgers are looking to offer another round of community boating events in Sunset Park this summer! We’ll be holding an organizational meeting on Thursday May 8 from 6-7:30 PM. The location is the lobby of Building A\, a waterfront warehouse at the end of 41st Street that was recently renovated by the city’s Economic Development Corporation.\n\nPlease consider joining us if you’re interested in seeing more community boating in Sunset Park! Whether you’re interested in volunteering or just participating in this summer’s events\, this event’s for you.\n\nWe’ll be deciding on dates and discussing logistics\, partnerships and promotional strategies\, etc. — as well as discussing the long-term possibilities for recreational boating and waterfront education in Sunset Park. The EDC plans to offer a substantial amount of ground floor space in Building A for use by community groups and water-dependent nonprofits\, so we’ll be discussing that\, as well as some of the nearby possibilities for water access.

SUMMARY:2025 Five Borough Waterfront Mayoral Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Dredgers are co-sponsoring the 2025 Five Borough Waterfront Mayoral Forum. We advocate for and operate water access in seven locations across Brooklyn\, Queens\, and Staten Island\, and we’re excited to hear from this year’s mayoral candidates on their vision for our collective waterfront. Register for the Zoom event here! \nNew York City’s waterfront is home to people\, parks and beaches\, businesses\, docks\, trains\, roads\, ports\, and critical infrastructure that support our daily lives. The next Mayor must embrace the waterfront as a signature priority of their administration. We will be asking candidates a series of questions about the various aspects of the waterfront. The Five Borough Waterfront Forum is where candidates for Mayor will answer questions and present their vision for climate\, recreation\, maritime\, workforce\, public access\, and all things across New York City’s 520 linear miles of shoreline. \nThis Forum is sponsored by the following organizations: \nCity Island Rising\, Environmental Defense Fund\, Gowanus Canal Conservancy\, Gowanus Dredgers\, Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy\, LES Ready!\, Natural Areas Conservancy\, NYC Soil and Water Conservation District\, New York League of Conservation Voters – EF\, Newtown Creek Alliance\, Ocean Bay CDC\, Regional Plan Association\, South Bronx Unite\, Staten Island Urban Center\, SWIM Coalition\, Urban Green Council\, and the Waterfront Alliance. \nThis event is coupled with the 2025 Waterfront Conference\, hosted in-person at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City\, on May 13. Registration for the Waterfront Conference is not required to attend the Virtual Mayoral Candidates Forum. SUMMARY:A Persistence of Cormorants Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. Event may move to inside the boathouse if it begins to rain or we want to escape the summer heat. If other activity is occurring on the street or esplanade\, event may move inside. \nParticipation is free but we encourage donations to sustain the efforts of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club\, an advocacy stewardship organization who has been representing neighborhood interests for over two decades. \nMay4th: Gregory Crosby\, Brad Vogel\, Melinda Wilson\, Anthony Cappo18th: Scott Hightower\, Abigail Wellhouse\, Kristina Andersson\, Estha Weiner 25th: Michael Broder\, James Diaz\, Kristine Esser Stenz\, Sarah Sari \nJune1st: Susan Cohen\, Sarah Wallace\, Jiwon Choi\, Caroline Hagood 8th: Jo Solfren\, Amy Lemmon\, Sam Cha\, TBA22nd: Bruce E. SUMMARY:Release
DESCRIPTION:Come witness and participate in Release\, a temporary installation and informal movement session developed as part of a two-part workshop held at Coney Island Creek and Gowanus. Join us at the Dredgers Boat House to witness and explore: what gets collected and recorded when we connect to a place and the living things that occupy the place? What gets activated when these recordings are shared in a different space and time? How to move and make movements from these activations? \nPresented by Nora Almeida and iki nakagawa
