SUMMARY:A Persistence of Cormorants Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting + Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual volunteer orientation (sign-up here)\, member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 to start the orientation and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual volunteer orientation (sign-up here)\, member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 to start the orientation and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

SUMMARY:Q&A with John Henkelman: Paddler of the entire Hudson River
DESCRIPTION:John Henkelman is an experienced paddler\, Registered Maine Guide\, American Canoe Association instructor\, and Ph.D. student in Natural Resource Management whose research focuses on the human connection to rivers. This summer\, he is paddling the entire 315-mile length of the Hudson River — from its source in the Adirondacks to New York City — to raise awareness and funds for American Rivers\, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring waterways nationwide. Along the way\, John is measuring water quality\, documenting the river’s health\, and engaging with riverfront communities to understand their relationship with this iconic waterway. \nJohn’s paddle journey ended this weekend\, at our very own 19th St. Bunker dock! DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual volunteer orientation (sign-up here)\, member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 to start the orientation and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

DESCRIPTION:Demonstration Public Paddling Days at Bush Terminal Park\nSaturday\, July 19\, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM\nSaturday\, August 16\, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM\nSaturday\, September 13\, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM \nJoin us for three weekends of on-water fun at Bush Terminal Piers Park with free\, walk-up paddling in Sunset Park. \nWe’re planning on having a mixed fleet of sit-on-top kayaks\, canoes\, and stand-up paddle boards — along with a wooden rowing dory\, available for use on a first-come\, first-served basis. Kayak Polo will have some demonstrations available in August and September! Check back for more updates from our partners. \nThe Gowanus Dredgers\, NYC Watertrail Association\, Red Hook Boaters\, The Kayak Foundation\, and New York Kayak Polo are presenting demonstration public paddling days at Bush Terminal Park (in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn) to show the Parks Department and other stakeholders what’s possible this unique location is made into an official NYC kayak and canoe launch site\, and to advocate for a community boathouse on site. DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. DESCRIPTION:Join The Gowanus Dredgers for a weekend of Creature Feature paddle-in movies! We’re screening our seasonal favorite\, Creature from the Black Lagoon\, as well as a new-to-us film\, The Beast from 20\,000 Fathoms. Tickets will be available starting 10/10\, register for each screening separately. \nOctober 24th: Our annual screening of Creature From the Black Lagoon\nOctober 25th: The Beast from 20\,000 Fathoms \nBook your ticket via eventbrite. Register for a free ticket to view from the shore or book a seat in a canoe to paddle from our 19th St. dock to our screening location. Canoes depart promptly at 6:00pm so don’t be late. Costumes encouraged! \nIf you’re joining us on shore\, we encourage you to bring a lawn chair or a blanket for seating. We’ll message everyone who has RSVP‘ed with the screening location a few days before the event. \n  \n\n\n\nOctober 24th: Creature from the Black Lagoon \nNear the Arctic Circle researchers detonate a nuclear device and unwittingly thaw a prehistoric beast frozen for millions of years. The monster leaves a path of destruction across eastern North America as it heads straight for New York City. When heavy artillery proves ineffective against the towering creature\, scientist Tom Nesbitt (Paul Christian) concocts a radioactive formula to neutralize the beast — and ace shot Cpl. Stone (Lee Van Cleef) will deliver it by grenade. \nRelease date: June 13\, 1953\nRunning time: 1h 20m \n  \n\nOctober 25th: The Beast from 20\,000 Fathoms \nRemnants of a mysterious animal have come to light in a remote jungle\, and a group of scientists intends to determine if the find is an anomaly or evidence of an undiscovered beast.
