SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting + Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual volunteer orientation (sign-up here)\, member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 to start the orientation and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

SUMMARY:A Persistence of Cormorants Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. Kayak Polo will have some demonstrations available in August and September! Check back for more updates from our partners. \nThe Gowanus Dredgers\, NYC Watertrail Association\, Red Hook Boaters\, The Kayak Foundation\, and New York Kayak Polo are presenting demonstration public paddling days at Bush Terminal Park (in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn) to show the Parks Department and other stakeholders what’s possible this unique location is made into an official NYC kayak and canoe launch site\, and to advocate for a community boathouse on site. SUMMARY:Q&A with John Henkelman: Paddler of the entire Hudson River
DESCRIPTION:John Henkelman is an experienced paddler\, Registered Maine Guide\, American Canoe Association instructor\, and Ph.D. student in Natural Resource Management whose research focuses on the human connection to rivers. This summer\, he is paddling the entire 315-mile length of the Hudson River — from its source in the Adirondacks to New York City — to raise awareness and funds for American Rivers\, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring waterways nationwide. Along the way\, John is measuring water quality\, documenting the river’s health\, and engaging with riverfront communities to understand their relationship with this iconic waterway. \nJohn’s paddle journey ended this weekend\, at our very own 19th St. Bunker dock! Join us Tuesday evening at the boathouse for a casual chat and Q&A with John to hear about his journey raising awareness\, measuring water quality\, and connecting with fellow paddlers!

DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. DESCRIPTION:Demonstration Public Paddling Days at Bush Terminal Park\nSaturday\, July 19\, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM\nSaturday\, August 16\, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM\nSaturday\, September 13\, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM \nJoin us for three weekends of on-water fun at Bush Terminal Piers Park with free\, walk-up paddling in Sunset Park. \nWe’re planning on having a mixed fleet of sit-on-top kayaks\, canoes\, and stand-up paddle boards — along with a wooden rowing dory\, available for use on a first-come\, first-served basis. Kayak Polo will have some demonstrations available in August and September! Check back for more updates from our partners. \nThe Gowanus Dredgers\, NYC Watertrail Association\, Red Hook Boaters\, The Kayak Foundation\, and New York Kayak Polo are presenting demonstration public paddling days at Bush Terminal Park (in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn) to show the Parks Department and other stakeholders what’s possible this unique location is made into an official NYC kayak and canoe launch site\, and to advocate for a community boathouse on site. DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual volunteer orientation (sign-up here)\, member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 to start the orientation and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting + Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual volunteer orientation (sign-up here)\, member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 to start the orientation and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. \nGerry reads poetry at the canal\nThe readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. \nReading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting + Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Socialize with the Dredgers at our BUNKER (2 19th St\, off of 3rd Ave) for a casual volunteer orientation (sign-up here)\, member catch-up and paddle! We’ll gather at 6:30 to start the orientation and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. In case of inclement weather\, meeting will be relocated follow us on Instagram or sign up for our mailing list to stay informed.

DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Dredgers are co-sponsoring the 2025 Five Borough Waterfront Mayoral Forum. We advocate for and operate water access in seven locations across Brooklyn\, Queens\, and Staten Island\, and we’re excited to hear from this year’s mayoral candidates on their vision for our collective waterfront. Register for the Zoom event here! \nNew York City’s waterfront is home to people\, parks and beaches\, businesses\, docks\, trains\, roads\, ports\, and critical infrastructure that support our daily lives. The next Mayor must embrace the waterfront as a signature priority of their administration. We will be asking candidates a series of questions about the various aspects of the waterfront. SUMMARY:Meeting: Help Grow Public Boating in Sunset Park!
DESCRIPTION:The NYC Water Trail Association and the Gowanus Dredgers are looking to offer another round of community boating events in Sunset Park this summer! We’ll be holding an organizational meeting on Thursday May 8 from 6-7:30 PM. The location is the lobby of Building A\, a waterfront warehouse at the end of 41st Street that was recently renovated by the city’s Economic Development Corporation.\n\nPlease consider joining us if you’re interested in seeing more community boating in Sunset Park! Whether you’re interested in volunteering or just participating in this summer’s events\, this event’s for you.\n\nWe’ll be deciding on dates and discussing logistics\, partnerships and promotional strategies\, etc. — as well as discussing the long-term possibilities for recreational boating and waterfront education in Sunset Park. The EDC plans to offer a substantial amount of ground floor space in Building A for use by community groups and water-dependent nonprofits\, so we’ll be discussing that\, as well as some of the nearby possibilities for water access.

As the head of Hudson River Park’s River Project\, Carrie leads complex coastal resiliency projects\, cross-sector partnerships for innovative STEM research\, place-based environmental education\, and interdisciplinary teams. She dedicates her work to the health of urban waterways and to empowering local communities to be environmental stewards through participatory science. Carrie has a M.S. in aquatic science and environmental justice from University of Michigan’s School for Environment and Sustainability and is a proud Bowdoin College polar bear. \nSiddhartha Hayes (he/him) is a field scientist\, aquarist\, etymology enthusiast\, and fish whisperer. As Manager of Research & Aquaria at Hudson River Park\, he conducts and oversees various ecological sampling projects\, from year-round fish trapping and river condition monitoring to surface water pathogens\, shoreline plastics\, oysters\, and more. He also manages the Pier 40 River Project Wetlab\, a flow-through aquarium of native Hudson River organisms that serves as one of the Park’s primary education sites. He has worked for 10 years to facilitate research that answers important questions about the river and its denizens and spark a sense of wonder by connecting people with their aquatic neighbors. Siddhartha has a Bachelor’s in Biology and Greek & Roman Studies from Vassar College. \n\n\nMade possible with support from Citizens Committee for New York City.
