SUMMARY:Unheard-of Ensemble : Ginger Flavored Bubblegum
DESCRIPTION:Join Unheard-of Ensemble and the Gowanus Dredgers for an expanded version of Ginger Flavored Bubblegum. The work explores transcendence from grief by honoring poet\, filmmaker\, and artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha – who was murdered only a few days after the publication of her poetic autobiography\, “Dictee.” Using selections of poetry from Dictee\, this expanded version explores grief using Unheard-of Ensemble\, electronics\, and videography by Phong Tran (who some might recognize from his electronic set last season). \nThe program also features David Crowell’s Memories of the Imagined and a special set from incredible cellist and electronic artist MIZU. \n🎟️ FREE RSVP & Canoe Tickets available here 🎟️ \n\nAbout the Cultural Ecologies Series: Unheard-of Ensemble\, in collaboration with the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club\, features world premieres and cutting edge music by artists exploring climate change\, race\, technology’s impact on our mental health\, and feminism presented in a setting that brings people closer together in an open and adventurous way. These free performances will take place at the Gowanus Dredgers Bunker as well as their paddle-in movie location (both ADA accessible). The audience will be able to attend the performance either via canoe (reserved in advance via donation to the Dredgers)\, sitting on one of the Dredgers’ new docks\, or on shore via an accessible location. Each performance opens with a talk given by members of the Dredgers about their work in the Canal. \nAbout Unheard-of: Ford Fourqurean (clarinet)\, Matheus Souza (violin)\, Iva Casian-Lakoš (cello)\, and Daniel Anastasio (piano) are Unheard-of\, a Brooklyn-based clarinet\, violin\, cello\, and piano quartet performing dedicated to connecting new music to communities in New York and across the United States through the development and performance of adventurous programs using technology and interactive multimedia. Unheard-of is committed to the idea that new music belongs in every community\, and implements this mission through concerts and educational workshops throughout New York as well as on tour. Unheard-of originally started as a commissioning project by Ford and Daniel in 2014 to expand the chamber music repertoire for clarinet and piano. The group formed as a quartet in 2018 and has since grown into a nation-wide community across multiple artistic genres. With an approach that is open and welcoming of all voices\, Unheard-of strives to be a vehicle for development and growth for voices novel and experienced\, experimental and traditional\, uncomfortable and accessible. \n\n\nTHIS PROGRAM IS SUPPORTED\, IN PART\, BY PUBLIC FUNDS FROM THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY COUNCIL. \nUnheard-of’s performances are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:The Fish Queen of the Gowanus Canal: An On-Water Musical
DESCRIPTION:The Fish Queen of the Gowanus Canal\nby Wes Braver\, additional book by Rebecca Slaman\nProduced by Wes Braver\, Joseph Alexiou & Brad Vogel in partnership with the Gowanus Dredgers \nJoin the Gowanus Dredgers for this one-of-a-kind theater experience! We have two tiers of tickets\, from the shore or via canoe\, where you’ll get to paddle around our performers on floating stages. This is a show not to be missed.\n🎟️ GET YOUR TICKETS NOW 🎟️ \nImage by Melissa Tomczak\nIn nature\, ecologists can assess the health of an ecosystem by studying its waterways. This show explores the toxic culture of America by focusing on one of its most toxic waterways: the Gowanus Canal. \nRumors have been spreading of a superorganism lurking beneath the murky water…a monster made out of toxic industrial runoff and human sewage\, that holds all the memories of everyone whose waste has ever gone into the water… \nThe Fish Queen tells the story of a place polluted by violence\, from the first Dutch settlers who displaced the native Lenape tribes who fished in the Gowanus creek\, to the Battle of Brooklyn fought on its shores\, to the police who cleared out poor Irish tenements\, to the mafia bosses who used the canal as a body-dumping ground. The Fish Queen\, like the canal she lives in\, is full of contradictions: the multi-headed being\, played by eight actors\, will sing funny songs\, sad songs\, angry songs\, weighty songs and petty songs. \nAs many of us who live\, work\, and maybe even paddle on the Gowanus know\, beauty still can thrive here between the cracks. This show celebrates that while wrestling with questions of how to love and gather ourselves against the forces that keep the toxic cycles going. \nCome see this once in a lifetime world premiere production in the most fitting place imaginable: In the f*cking Gowanus Canal. (This is a PG-13 show for dirty language\, which only feels appropriate for the subject matter) \nIf raining or threatening weather (high winds\, lightning) by 5:30pm we may cancel.
