We’ll learn practical skills for exploring our urban waterways: paddling\, radio communication\, knots & line work\, trip planning\, chart reading\, tides & currents\, weather\, water safety\, and making events. \nThis four-session program runs over two weekend — June 7-8\, June 14-15 (Saturday & Sunday) — from 10am -1:30pm. Sessions will build on one another\, so participation in all sessions is expected.\n \nRegistration is a sliding scale fee: \n\nRegular: $200 — this is the full cost of the program for participants\nSupported: $100 — for those unable to pay the full cost\nPay-It-Forward: $300 — for those able to help support the program.\n\nSign up now! If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. Grab a paddle and speaker and explore the upper canal!\n\n\n\n\nTravelogue: 2nd Street Sound Paddle\nDate: Sunday\, June 29th\, 2025\, 12PM-4:30PM Open Paddle (Pop-up performance at 4:30PM)\nUPDATE: We are ending the open paddle a little earlier because of low tide\nLocation: Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse\, 165 2nd St\, Brooklyn\, NY 11231 \nUnheard-of and music technologist Brian Ellis team up for the second iteration of our sound paddle\, this time exploring the upper Gowanus from 2nd street to flushing tunnel. Hear sights\, sounds\, and stories from the Gowanus at your own pace via headphones or bluetooth speaker during any open paddle. As part of the opening day\, members of the ensemble and the Dredgers will be able to guide you as you embark on your journey. There will be mini pop-ups throughout the day and a short live performance at 4:30PM in the boathouse with drinks to celebrate the opening! \n—— \nThis performance takes place on the Gowanus Canal\, from the 2nd Street Boathouse. The audience can immerse themselves in the experience on the Gowanus\, enjoying the program from on land or on water. \nWeather may postpone event. \n—— \nThis program is supported\, in part\, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. \nUnheard-of’s performances are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. \n\n\n  \nWHAT IS THE CULTURAL ECOLOGIES SERIES? \nUnheard-of Ensemble\, in collaboration with the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club\, launches its newest performance series\, Cultural Ecologies\, an immersive set of multimedia concerts utilizing Brooklyn’s own Gowanus Canal as our stage. This four-show series features world premieres and cutting edge pieces by artists exploring stories of climate change\, technology’s impact on our mental health\, racial violence\, and feminism presented in a setting that brings people closer together in an open and adventurous way.

DESCRIPTION:Join our Crew on a full-moon guided adventure!! Meet at the the Gowanus Dredgers Bunker\, at the end of 19th St / off 3rd Ave\, 11232 – NOT our 2nd St. boathouse. Tickets are required\, get yours here.  \nSunset 8:28 | Moonrise 8:54 | Civil End 9:01 | Nautical End 9:42 \nThe stars should be on display along with harbor lights. We will provide lights for each canoe\, you’re welcome to bring/wear your own head lamp as well. Each canoe will have up to 3 people. Solo paddlers are welcome\, you will be paired with other members of the group based on experience and comfort in a canoe. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. \nDue to EPA cleaning of the Gowanus Canal\, voyage will head towards the 9th St bridge and return to Gowanus Bay and our new South Gowanus Bunker. \nIf raining or threatening weather (high winds\, lightning) by 6:30pm we may cancel. Attendees will be notified via the email used to purchase tickets. Tour is not cancelled due to clouds but let’s hope for a clear sky for the moon rise! \nTickets are nonrefundable for any event that proceeds as planned. We will offer the option to transfer your ticket to another event if we have to cancel for weather. Transfer must be requested before the tour starts. If you choose not to transfer\, the cost of your ticket becomes a tax-deductible donation to the Gowanus Dredgers.

Trips may be limited to 20 minutes if there’s a crowd — but usually we just expect you to return to the dock 15 min. prior to closing. \nWho can participate? Paddling is for everyone! Free walk-up canoeing is open to all ages. Groups\, families\, solo paddlers\, and intrepid first dates are all welcome! Kayak Polo will have some demonstrations available in August and September! Check back for more updates from our partners. \nThe Gowanus Dredgers\, NYC Watertrail Association\, Red Hook Boaters\, The Kayak Foundation\, and New York Kayak Polo are presenting demonstration public paddling days at Bush Terminal Park (in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn) to show the Parks Department and other stakeholders what’s possible this unique location is made into an official NYC kayak and canoe launch site\, and to advocate for a community boathouse on site. SUMMARY:Q&A with John Henkelman: Paddler of the entire Hudson River
DESCRIPTION:John Henkelman is an experienced paddler\, Registered Maine Guide\, American Canoe Association instructor\, and Ph.D. student in Natural Resource Management whose research focuses on the human connection to rivers. This summer\, he is paddling the entire 315-mile length of the Hudson River — from its source in the Adirondacks to New York City — to raise awareness and funds for American Rivers\, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring waterways nationwide. Along the way\, John is measuring water quality\, documenting the river’s health\, and engaging with riverfront communities to understand their relationship with this iconic waterway. \nJohn’s paddle journey ended this weekend\, at our very own 19th St. Bunker dock! Join us Tuesday evening at the boathouse for a casual chat and Q&A with John to hear about his journey raising awareness\, measuring water quality\, and connecting with fellow paddlers!

DESCRIPTION:Demonstration Public Paddling Days at Bush Terminal Park\nSaturday\, July 19\, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM\nSaturday\, August 16\, 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM\nSaturday\, September 13\, 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM \nJoin us for three weekends of on-water fun at Bush Terminal Piers Park with free\, walk-up paddling in Sunset Park. \nWe’re planning on having a mixed fleet of sit-on-top kayaks\, canoes\, and stand-up paddle boards — along with a wooden rowing dory\, available for use on a first-come\, first-served basis. Kayak Polo will have some demonstrations available in August and September! Check back for more updates from our partners. \nThe Gowanus Dredgers\, NYC Watertrail Association\, Red Hook Boaters\, The Kayak Foundation\, and New York Kayak Polo are presenting demonstration public paddling days at Bush Terminal Park (in Sunset Park\, Brooklyn) to show the Parks Department and other stakeholders what’s possible this unique location is made into an official NYC kayak and canoe launch site\, and to advocate for a community boathouse on site. We’ll gather at 6:30 to start the orientation and aim to be on-water around 7:15. \nMeet at the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club 19th St. Launch\, 2 19 St\, Brooklyn\, (off of 3rd Ave.). If you plan to join the paddle\, wear sunscreen and bring a bottle filled with water. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. All paddlers must sign a waiver. \nWeather (wind\, waves or evidence of storm) may cancel the paddling portion with one hour advance notice. SUMMARY:Full Moon Gowanus Voyage - September
DESCRIPTION:Join our Crew on a full-moon guided adventure!! Meet at the the Gowanus Dredgers Bunker\, at the end of 19th St / off 3rd Ave\, 11232 – NOT our 2nd St. boathouse. Tickets are required\, get yours here.  \nSunset 7:18 | Moonrise 7:21 | Civil End 7:46 | Nautical End 8:18 \nThe stars should be on display along with harbor lights. We will provide lights for each canoe\, you’re welcome to bring/wear your own head lamp as well. Each canoe will have up to 3 people. Solo paddlers are welcome\, you will be paired with other members of the group based on experience and comfort in a canoe. Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Use a restroom before arrival\, as we have limited facilities on-site. \nDue to EPA cleaning of the Gowanus Canal\, voyage will head towards the 9th St bridge and return to Gowanus Bay and our new South Gowanus Bunker. \nIf raining or threatening weather (high winds\, lightning) by 6:30pm we may cancel. Attendees will be notified via the email used to purchase tickets. Tour is not cancelled due to clouds but let’s hope for a clear sky for the moon rise! \nTickets are nonrefundable for any event that proceeds as planned. We will offer the option to transfer your ticket to another event if we have to cancel for weather. Transfer must be requested before the tour starts. If you choose not to transfer\, the cost of your ticket becomes a tax-deductible donation to the Gowanus Dredgers.
