Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. \nIs it really free?  Yes! But donations are encouraged to help us continue offering these and other programs. \nCan I volunteer? Yes! You can sign up to volunteer here. No prior experience is required\, but we love return volunteers! Note: Volunteer shifts run from 30-minutes before the start of the program through the first two hours\, or from the middle of the program to 30 minutes after the end of the scheduled time.

SUMMARY:Paddle-In Movie: Gowanus Current
DESCRIPTION:Join The Gowanus Dredgers for an on-water screening of Gowanus Current\, a documentary by Jamie Courville and Chris Reynolds\, and a discussion with the filmmakers at the Boathouse after the show! \nBook your ticket via eventbrite. We’ll meet at the Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse (165 2nd St.)\, but the screening takes place on the Gowanus Canal\, with on-water seating in the Gowanus Dredger fleet of canoes. \nGowanus Current: Decades of industrial waste and raw sewage have turned Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal into one of the nation’s most toxic bodies of water. The arrival of a billion dollar EPA cleanup and a massive city-led rezoning herald a new era\, but what’s of value in a neighborhood\, and who gets to decide? Shot over the course of ten years\, Gowanus Current employs a strictly observational approach to examine the convictions of this diverse community and the textures of its landscape. As neighbors negotiate this top-down transformation\, they reveal intentions far more nuanced and entangled than a NIMBY/YIMBY dichotomy. A portrait of activism and its limits\, this is urgent civic cinema exploring the human side of the conflict engendered by a housing crisis\, income inequality and a changing climate.

SUMMARY:Paddle-In Movie: Creature from the Black Lagoon
DESCRIPTION:Our annual paddle-in screening of Creature from the Black Lagoon! \n\n\n\n\nJoin The Gowanus Dredgers for our annual paddle-in screening of 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon. It’s your last chance to join us for an on-the-water cinematic event this season\, so don’t miss it! \nBook your ticket via eventbrite. We’ll meet at the Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse (165 2nd St.)\, but the screening takes place on the Gowanus Canal\, with on-water seating in the Gowanus Dredger fleet of canoes. \nCreature from the Black Lagoon: Near the Arctic Circle researchers detonate a nuclear device and unwittingly thaw a prehistoric beast frozen for millions of years. The monster leaves a path of destruction across eastern North America as it heads straight for New York City. When heavy artillery proves ineffective against the towering creature\, scientist Tom Nesbitt (Paul Christian) concocts a radioactive formula to neutralize the beast — and ace shot Cpl. Stone (Lee Van Cleef) will deliver it by grenade.
