SUMMARY:Gowanus Jug & String Band Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Thursday evenings starting May 1st\, 6-8:30 at the Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse 165 2nd Street between Bond and the Gowanus Canal. We are excited to expand our musical offerings with this new weekly jam.\nJam Leader: Papa Ernie Vega\nDredger Host: Liz Rabson Schnore\n$5 Suggested Donation\n  \nWhat  Jug band and String band music?\n\nLet’s start with String band music. Black String band music\, which will be our focus\, was created by Southern Blacks and pre-dates the Blues & Jazz. Groups which consisted of mostly stringed instruments (guitar\, banjo\, bass\, violin\, mandolin\, ukulele\, etc) performed a wide variety of songs and styles for all manner of social functions and for personal enjoyment;  two-steps\, waltzes and breakdowns for dances\, ballads and love songs\, humorous & novelty songs\, as well as blues\, jazz\, and pop tunes as they came into fashion. This genre\, sadly\, was under-represented by the burgeoning recording industry in the 1920’s and 30’s\, which helped contribute to its already declining popularity in the wake of the success of the Blues and Jazz: though groups like the Mississippi Sheiks and the Dallas String Band did make great and popular recordings. The genre never completely died out\, however\, and is alive and well today thanks to the perseverance of its practitioners and the dedication of its fans\, which has led to a rediscovery and a new appreciation by audiences young and old. \nJug band music developed in the early 20th century within Southern Black communities and was essentially a string band with a jug used as a “poor man’s tuba”\, in the role of a bass instrument. Other household items as instruments were popular as well; washboard and/or spoons for percussion\, washtub bass\, and kazoo. These combined with the guitars\, banjos\, mandolins/violins of the traditional string band\, along with the harmonica\, made for a unique sound that won the hearts of the public in the early days of the recording industry. The Memphis Jug Band and Cannon’s Jug Stompers recorded well over a hundred examples of blues\, ballads\, pop and dance numbers – and they’re just the tip of the iceberg. The genre found new life in the Folk Music Revival of the 1960’s and remains popular to this day.\nThese sessions will be open to Intermediate and above players\, and we encourage you to sing along and bring a song to lead. To lead a song\, you will be expected to sing it loudly enough for those around you to hear\, to know the key you will sing in\, and to explain the chord changes and form of the song if need be.  We may also discuss some ideas for performing in an ensemble to help everyone find their place in the music. \n\n\nPapa Ernie Vega is a NYC singer\, instrumentalist\, bandleader\, teacher\, songwriter and performing/recording artist. He has over 20 years of professional experience and has performed at the Newport Folk Festival\, the Jug Band Jubilee and the Osaka Jug Band Festival. He also taught and performed at the Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival from 2016-2021. He is a lover of fine cheap food\, old movies\, humor\, and photography.

SUMMARY:2025 Five Borough Waterfront Mayoral Forum
DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Dredgers are co-sponsoring the 2025 Five Borough Waterfront Mayoral Forum. We advocate for and operate water access in seven locations across Brooklyn\, Queens\, and Staten Island\, and we’re excited to hear from this year’s mayoral candidates on their vision for our collective waterfront. The Five Borough Waterfront Forum is where candidates for Mayor will answer questions and present their vision for climate\, recreation\, maritime\, workforce\, public access\, and all things across New York City’s 520 linear miles of shoreline. \nThis Forum is sponsored by the following organizations: \nCity Island Rising\, Environmental Defense Fund\, Gowanus Canal Conservancy\, Gowanus Dredgers\, Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy\, LES Ready!\, Natural Areas Conservancy\, NYC Soil and Water Conservation District\, New York League of Conservation Voters – EF\, Newtown Creek Alliance\, Ocean Bay CDC\, Regional Plan Association\, South Bronx Unite\, Staten Island Urban Center\, SWIM Coalition\, Urban Green Council\, and the Waterfront Alliance. \nThis event is coupled with the 2025 Waterfront Conference\, hosted in-person at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park City\, on May 13. The location is the lobby of Building A\, a waterfront warehouse at the end of 41st Street that was recently renovated by the city’s Economic Development Corporation.\n\nPlease consider joining us if you’re interested in seeing more community boating in Sunset Park! Whether you’re interested in volunteering or just participating in this summer’s events\, this event’s for you.\n\nWe’ll be deciding on dates and discussing logistics\, partnerships and promotional strategies\, etc. — as well as discussing the long-term possibilities for recreational boating and waterfront education in Sunset Park. The EDC plans to offer a substantial amount of ground floor space in Building A for use by community groups and water-dependent nonprofits\, so we’ll be discussing that\, as well as some of the nearby possibilities for water access.

SUMMARY:MUCKING THINGS UP: NATE DORR & WILL VAN DORP
DESCRIPTION:MUCKING THINGS UP: NATE DORR & WILL VAN DORP\nan intertidal talk with the Gowanus Dredgers  \n\nApril 8\, 2025 7 pm\n\nGowanus Dredgers Boathouse\n165 2nd Street\, Brooklyn\n\nFree \n  \n\n\n\nJoin the Gowanus Dredgers for a talk in our Mucking Things Up series! This is a series of informal talks focused more on storytelling than slideshows. Our speakers this month are NATE DORR & WILL VAN DORP. \n  \n\nNate Dorr is a filmmaker and photographer whose work examines the complicated landscapes of the late Anthropocene. Based in Brooklyn\, lapsed neuroscientist\, habitual wanderer of transitory pseudo-urban spaces. Recent projects explore the chemical legacies of our conflicted waterways. By filming in Superfund estuaries and canals on 16mm\, then washing the footage in those waters\, contaminants are picked up by sensitive emulsion to bring hidden histories to light. The results can be striking and eerily illuminating. This technique was developed for the forthcoming film Chemical Meadows about the New Jersey Meadowlands\, but waters closer to home\, like the mid-cleanup Gowanus Canal\, provide opportunity for further experimentation.\n\nWill Van Dorp is an expert on vessels in New York Harbor. He runs the Tugster blog\, whose goal is to help landfolk see his home waters — the port of New York — from the water perspective. The “sixth boro” is Will’s invented term for the waters in and around the port. \n\n\nSupport from Citizens Committee for New York City.

SUMMARY:Street / Art Gowanus walking tour: Women's March Theme
DESCRIPTION:Rich Garr leads this comfortable open-air exploration through the Gowanus waterfront. He is a longtime area collage artist focusing on public art and community. These walks respond to both current events and history\, and a central component of his interdisciplinary collage art practice. These monthly public walking tours focus on art in and about the streets\, with histories layered into the experience. They’re carefully planned\, but unscripted and collaborative. Always fresh. Check @GothamSideWalks on Instagram for monthly themes- now announced in advance. Feel free to propose themes there\, too! \nTickets for these monthly Brooklyn walks often sell out. So try early. They cannot be purchased after 8am on the morning of the walk. \nGuild\, Captain Eyeliner\, RaeBK\, Billy Barnacles and other street art is often featured. So are historical landmarks (you all know about the Battle of Brooklyn\, right?)\, architectural gems\, hidden art spaces\, art by anonymous “green guerillas\,” and renowned graffiti writers. While old pollution lingers\, so do new issues surrounding gentrification and re-zoning. The area is changing rapidly\, and this tour offers real-time information & insight. Walks pass historic businesses\, hip new bars & cafes\, and quirky art & recreational spaces (i.e. shuffleboard\, climbing and ax throwing)… with plenty to taste and see before or after. Walks have been attended by a mix of tourists and locals alike for over a decade!
