SUMMARY:MUCKING THINGS UP: NATE DORR & WILL VAN DORP
DESCRIPTION:MUCKING THINGS UP: NATE DORR & WILL VAN DORP\nan intertidal talk with the Gowanus Dredgers  \n\nApril 8\, 2025 7 pm\n\nGowanus Dredgers Boathouse\n165 2nd Street\, Brooklyn\n\nFree \n  \n\n\n\nJoin the Gowanus Dredgers for a talk in our Mucking Things Up series! This is a series of informal talks focused more on storytelling than slideshows. Our speakers this month are NATE DORR & WILL VAN DORP. \n  \n\nNate Dorr is a filmmaker and photographer whose work examines the complicated landscapes of the late Anthropocene. Based in Brooklyn\, lapsed neuroscientist\, habitual wanderer of transitory pseudo-urban spaces. Recent projects explore the chemical legacies of our conflicted waterways. By filming in Superfund estuaries and canals on 16mm\, then washing the footage in those waters\, contaminants are picked up by sensitive emulsion to bring hidden histories to light. The results can be striking and eerily illuminating. This technique was developed for the forthcoming film Chemical Meadows about the New Jersey Meadowlands\, but waters closer to home\, like the mid-cleanup Gowanus Canal\, provide opportunity for further experimentation.\n\nWill Van Dorp is an expert on vessels in New York Harbor. He runs the Tugster blog\, whose goal is to help landfolk see his home waters — the port of New York — from the water perspective. The “sixth boro” is Will’s invented term for the waters in and around the port. \n\n\nSupport from Citizens Committee for New York City.
